"I was terrified- the first thing my mother did when she saw me was to cut my tongue."(164)
I have loved reading this book and hearing so many great conversations in class. Learning from classmates who have either gone through these traditions, or knows somebody who has, has been such a rewarding experience. It is hard for me to imagine going through some of these things, because of how I grew up and how I was raised."Things are different in this ghost country."(164) The United States is so different from other countries. We are truly blessed to live in a place where we don't have to experience the customs that happen in other Countries. In class on Thursday, Black Panther asked how we thought our lives would be different if we lived in the country of our ethnicity. I had never thought about that and it made me realize how different my life would really be. It also made me think what if I had even been born during a different time period in the United States? My life would be completely different. I am so blessed to have the family I have, live in the United States, and to live in this time period.

"Her older sister was usually beside her." (172)
Growing up, my brother and I did a lot of things together. I knew all of his friends and usually tried to tag along whenever he went somewhere. I know he probably didn't want to do it, but it is probably one of the many reasons we are so close today.  However, I couldn't imagine that my "their parents kept the older daughter back to protect the younger one."(172) If my parents had done this, my brother would most likely grow up resenting not only my parents, but probably me too. Their parents probably had very good reasons for doing this and were just doing what they thought was best. As the children, it is hard to understand why our parents do certain things. As I have gotten older, I have started to understand why my parents were so hard on us as kids. They were doing what they thought was best and in the end I think it paid off. I am so thankful for my parents and everything they have done for my brother and I!
